COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tania Frank (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif.) scored four times to earn Player of the Game recognition as No. 1-ranked/Southwest Division Champion the University of California-San Diego outmatched No. 16/Southeast Division Champion Florida State University, 14-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship.

Competing at Texas A&M University’s Student Rec Center, the Tritons – who share the No. 1 position in the nation per the latest National Collegiate Club Top 20 Poll with Big Ten Division Champion the University of Michigan and the Sierra Pacific Division Champion the University of California-Davis – earn a spot in the tournament semifinals at 5:10 p.m. Central later today.  The game will be a match-up of No. 1 programs as UC-San Diego will take on defending National Champion Michigan with a spot in the National Championship game on Sunday, May 5, at 12;45 p.m Central on the line.

The loss drops Florida State into the consolation side of the 16-team, 30-game championship bracket as the Seminoles will take on No. 20/New England Division Champion Northeastern University – which dropped a 22-6 decision in the first quarterfinal of the day against Michigan – at 4:00 p.m. Central today with a berth in the Fifth Place game on the line.

UC-San Diego never trailed in dispatching the Seminoles as Frank netted man-up (5:47) and even-strength (2:10) scores to start the game and stake the Tritons to a 2-0 lead.  Lindsey Chessman (So., Orlando, Fla.) put Florida State on the scoreboard at 1:12, but Amanda Martilla (Gr., Canyon Lake, Calif.) spun home a response with 44 seconds on the clock to push UC-San Diego ahead 3-1 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Medley Bohn (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) chipped the Tritons’ margin back to one at 3-2 29 seconds into the second quarter, but UC-San Diego forked in six scores over the remainder of the first half to bury the Seminoles under the weight of a 9-2 halftime deficit.

Julia Derunes (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and Frank started the run with even-strength strikes at 4:22 and 3:51 , respectively, prior to Derunes cashing in on man-up (3:04) and natural (2:04) opportunities a minute a part to make it a 7-2 contest.  Frank and Natalie Kaplanyan (Sr., Glendale, Calif.) closed out the first 14 minutes of action by heaving balls into the twine at 1:32 and 53 seconds, respectively, to cap off the 6-0 outburst.

Chloe DeAvila (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) attempted to ignite a comeback by Florida State as she started the third quarter with a score (5:26), but Kaplanyan (4:25; 2:58) and Kayleigh Dennen (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) (2:23) concluded the term with back-to-back-to-back tallies to expand the gap to 12-3.

Nadia Alcaraz (Jr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Sunny Perkins (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) completed a 5-0 offensive streak to the final buzzer by the Tritons as the duo continued the scoring run started by Kaplanyan and Dennen to establish the 14-3 final score.

For Florida State, Bohn, Chessman and DeAvila provided the offense, while goalkeepers Sophie Bassett (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) (five) and Ceronne Mascall (Fr., El Dorado, Calif.) (three) combined for eight saves.

Frank (four), Derunes (three) and Kaplanyan (three) netted hat-tricks or better for 10 goals with Alcaraz, Martilla, Perkins and Dennen each contributing solo scores.  Goalkeepers Story Waxman (So., Santa Monica, Calif.) (two) and Brynna Moore (So., San Diego, Calif.) split time in cage with the duo turning aside two and three shots, respectively.
