GRESHAM, Ore. — 13 different players scored as No. 10-ranked/Midwest Division Champion Lindenwood University defeated Wellesley College, 30-0, in the first round of the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Washington at Mt. Hood Community College.
The Lions scored early and often in outdistancing The Blue by counts of 8-0, 9-0, 9-0, and 4-0 over the span of the game’s four quarters to clinch a berth in the tournament quarterfinals. Lindenwood will next be in action at 12:30 p.m. Pacific/3:30 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, May 5, in a quarterfinal clash with No. 11/Southwest Division Champion the University of California-San Diego. It will mark the first contested game of the event for UC-San Diego as the Tritons received a 5-0 forfeit win over Heartland Division Champion Grinnell College due to the Pioneers being unable to make their opening round contest because of travel issues to Oregon.
Wellesley, which falls into the consolation side of the bracket and will face a fresh Grinnell squad at 7:30 p.m. Pacific/10:30 p.m. this evening, was buried under the weight of Lindenwood’s offensive prowess in the first quarter and could not put together an answer over the remainder of the game.
For the Lions, Isabella Boccia (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) scored six times to lead the way for Lindenwood. Player of the Game Hanna Muller (Fr., East London, South Africa) chipped in five more, while the duo of Abby VerMeer (So., Saint Louis, Mo.) and Dani Rust (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) deposited hat-tricks with three goals apiece. Emily Kini (Fr., Palatine, Ill.), Madelynn Klein-Courville (Fr., Dixon, Calif.), Noelle Redman (Fr., Alvin, Texas) and Marina Vela Genesca (Jr., Castellar del Valles, Spain) each notched pairs of markers with the quintet of Sydney Walsh (Fr., Friendswood, Texas), Betsy Zanocco (Fr., Arlington Heights, Ill.), Heather Rosson (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), Paige Miller (Fr., Bend, Ore.) and Vladi Milutinovic (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) accounting for the other five goals with solo strikes.
In cage, Zanocco played the first and third quarters to finish with two saves for Lindenwood, while Harmony Moran (Fr., New Lenox, Ill.) played with second and fourth quarters with no saves. Rachel Utomo (Jr., Jakarta, Indonesia) notched seven saves to take the loss for The Blue.
