WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an astounding feat, senior Kristen Hong of No. 14-ranked Harvard University broke the previous career-goals record held by Yoshi Andersen (248), after collecting eight goals on the day for a grand total 254-career goals. The milestone came from a combination of goals in the 13-6 win over Saint Francis University and an 18-4 victory against host George Washington University in non-conference games as the Crimson improved to 17-4 on the season.
Against Saint Francis, Harvard jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first period in response to an early Red Flash goal. Crimson goals began with Lana Gorlinski, Mathilde Ribordy, Haley Bowe, Borden Wahl and Hong. Harvad scoring drives continued into the second as Sofia Carerra-Justiz capitalized on a man-up as she fired her team’s seventh consecutive strike through the goaltender’s grasp. Shortly after, Saint Francis worked three goals into the mix to exit the first half of play, trailing by a 9-4 count.
The third quarter of play saw more four more Crimson goals from Grace Thawley, Quinne Pursell, Hong and Bowe. Rounding out the final eight minutes of play, both sides of the pool played a strong defensive strategy, recording forced ejection after forced ejection to maintain the 13-5 score. In an almost scoreless period, Saint Francis converted on a man-up bid to close within seven prior to the final horn.
Heading into the contest against the host Colonials of George Washington just shy one goal from reaching the 250-career goals milestone, Hong reached the mark just a minute and a half into the contest for the Crimson’s second score of the game.
Moving into the second quarter holding an 8-1 advantage on the scoreboard, Harvard tallied four more goals from Pursell, Hong, Thawley and Olivia Price. Throughout the third quarter, Zoe Banks left the Colonials scoreless, allowing her offense to record another five-straight scores. To cap off the victory, Mathilde Ribordy found Quinne Pursell for the final blow in a 14-goal win.
Overall, both Pursell and Hong finished with five goals against Geroge Washington as the Crimson has now recorded wins with 15 or more goals on seven occasions this season.
