No. 15 University of Washington-vs.-No. 18 Yale University Scoresheet (2024 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship – Game #10)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Josephine Southwell (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) buried six balls into the cage to earn Player of the Game recognition as No. 15-ranked/Northwest Division Champion the University of Washington sank No. 18/North Atlantic Division Champion Yale University, 10-7, in a first day consolation game at the 2024 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Texas A&M University.

Courtesy the win, the Huskies advance to a 2:50 p.m. Central game on Saturday, May 4, versus the winner of a consolation game matching No. 14/Rocky Mountain Division Champion the University of Colorado and No. 20/New York Division Champion Cornell University.  The winner of Washington’s next game will play for Ninth Place on Sunday, May 5, at 2:15 p.m. Central, while the loser battles for 11th Place at 3:30 p.m. Central in the 30th and final game of the championship weekend.

Yale will see its season come to a close at 9:50 p.m. Central on Saturday, May 4, against the loser of the Colorado-Cornell game as the Bulldogs compete in a 13th/15th Place game.  Due to the number of games (30) during the championship weekend – and limited pool time – the 13th and 15th place games are not played.  Therefore, the winner of Yale’s final game ties for 13th place, while the loser ties for 15th place.

The Huskies got off the leash early against the Bulldogs as Southwell (5:47; 3:15) and Anika Harding (Jr., Danville, Calif.) (5:08) put Washington in front to stay at 3-0 less than four minutes into the first quarter.  Katherine Dick (Fr., Florence, Italy) placed Yale on the scoreboard with 2:07 glowing from the clock, but Harding struck again with 27 ticks remaining to make it a 4-1 game in favor of the Northwest Division Champions after seven minutes.

Southwell completed a hat-trick with 5:48 left in the second quarter to build the margin to 5-1 prior to Violette Perry (Jr., Christchurch, New Zealand) countering for the Bulldogs at 5:34 to inch Yale within 5-2.

However, Washington closed out the second quarter and first half with another three-goal surge as Mia Stitt (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash.) (5:16) and Southwell (3:12; 2:46) strung together back-to-back-to-back strikes to inflate the Huskies’ lead to 8-2.

Yale attempted to rally back in the third quarter as Elizabeth Lin (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and Perry punched in markers at 5:25 and 1:21, respectively.  However, Harding shook her defender and lined in a power-play score with 1:03 left in the frame to cushion Washington’s lead to 9-4 with seven minutes of regulation competition remaining in the contest.

The Bulldogs turned up the heat in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter as Dick deposited natural (5:51) and man-up (4:41) goals to move Yale within striking distance at 9-6.  Southwell, however, answered the call for her team by swishing her sixth score via a penalty shot with 3:28 on the clock for some insurance and a 10-6 lead.  Dick added her fourth goal with 2:22 to play by cashing in a man-up chance for the 10-7 final score.

For Washington, Southwell (seven), Harding (three) and Stitt accounted for the team’s offense to support a combined 13 save performance by goalkeepers Julia Lubas (So., Sonoma, Calif.) and Keira Garcia (Fr., Auburn, Wash.).

Dick (four), Perry (two) and Lin combined for Yale’s seven goals with netminder Michelle Wu (Gr., Cheshire, Conn.) stopping six shots.
