No. 16 Florida State University-vs.-No. 20 Northeastern University Scoresheet (2024 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship – Game #19)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Madilyn “Maddie” Johnson (Fr., Blue Bell, Pa.) scored three times  as No. 16-ranked/Southeast Division Champion Florida State University nicked a win from No. 20/New England Division Champion Northeastern University, 11-7, to make the Fifth Place game of the 2024 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship.

Competing at Texas A&M University’s Student Rec Center, Florida State never trailed in handling the Huskies and earning a 10:15 a.m. Central date on Sunday, May 5, for Fifth Place in the 30-game, three-day, 16-team championship’s final results against the victor of a consolation game pitting No. 5/Midwest Division Champion the University of Notre Dame and Mid-Atlantic Division Champion West Chester University .

Northeastern – which is making its inaugural appearance at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship – will take on the fallen from the Irish-Golden Rams game at 9:00 a.m. Central on Sunday, May 5, for Seventh Place.

FSU raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first 3:40 of the opening quarter against Northeastern as Chloe DeAvila (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) (6:35), Johnson (4:24; 3:20) and Charlotte “CJ” Palmer (So., Orlando, Fla.) (3:38) tickled the twine.

Northeastern stormed back, however, as Kenza Ashworth (Fr., Palo Alto, Calif.) went for the cycle by depositing man-up (3:08), penalty shot (54 seconds) and natural (30 seconds) goals to move the Huskies within one at 4-3.  DeAvila responded prior to the close of the game’s first seven minutes by slinging in an even-strength shot with seven ticks left on the clock for a 5-3 Seminoles’ scoreboard advantage.

The Huskies bit back as Ashworth (1:16) and Isabella Cenizal (Jr, Saratoga, Calif.) (27 seconds) helped level the field at five-all prior to Morgan Frazier firing in a go-ahead tally for Florida State with nine seconds left until halftime to hold a 6-5 lead at intermission.

The Seminoles continued to build upon the narrow lead in the third quarter as Medley Bohn (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), Johnson and Khloe Riordan (Gr., Lake Mary, Fla.) put away shots at 6:16, 2:50 and 17 seconds, respectively, to widen the gap to 9-5 entering the final seven minutes of regulation.

Lindsey Chessman (So., Orlando, Fla.) started the fourth quarter with another marker at 6:20 to double-up Northeastern by a 10-5 count.

The teams traded goals from there as Kayla McCleave (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored at 6:04 and 2:23 to sandwich another successful shot by Chessman (3:21) to trim the final difference to 11-7 prior to the closing horn.

For Florida State, Johnson (three), DeAvila (two) and Chessman (two) combined to equal Northeastern’s offensive output with Bohn, Frazier, Palmer and Riordan providing single tallies to determine the difference for victory.  Sophie Bassett (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) notched nine saves in cage to earn the win.

Ashworth (four) and McCleave (two) accounted for six of Northeastern’s scores with Cenizal chipping in one.  Goalkeeper Katie Kuyper (Jr., Waimea, Hawaii) turned back 13 scoring tries in taking the loss for the Huskies.
