PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Polly Creveling (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) scored four goals to notch Player of the Game honors as the No. 16-ranked/Rocky Mountain Division Champion University of Utah Utes downed the Heartland Division Champion Washington University in St. Louis Bears, 11-1, at the final 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship standings.
Following the contest, Utah forfeited the game for the use of an illegal player allowing Washington to tie for 13th in the fianl standing and the Utes to tie for 15th.
Utah, which previously placed Fourth (2004), Sixth (2002, 2006), Eighth (2009), Ninth (2016), 10th (2010) and 12th (2011, 2015) in the Utes’ prior trips to the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship, received scoring by five different players to account for the squad’s 10-goal victory in the exhibition game.
Besides Creveling, Ashley Wilcox (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) posted a hat-trick with Gabriella Minassian (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) chipping in a pair of markers. Hart Baresco (Fr., St. George, Utah) and Leann Nguyen (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) each hit the twine once, while goalie Natalie Benoy (Gr., Riverside, Ill.) allowed one goal and stopped four shots in claiming the victory between the pipes at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
Jennie Greenstein (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) tallied the Bears’ marker with netminder Isabelle Trier (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) making five saves.
Utah never trailed in the game by opening up a 5-1 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter and taking on one, three and two goals over the span of the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively, to record the victory.
For Washington, the game was an adjustment from their previous docket as the Bears exchanged positions with host institution the University of Pittsburgh due to travel arrangements that prevented the team from competing in any games on Sunday, May 7.
The change meant that No. 10-ranked/Mid-Atlantic Division Champion Pittsburgh competed in and won by a 10-6 count the 2:50 p.m. game against North Atlantic Division Champion the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to reach the Ninth Place game on Sunday against No. 11/Texas Division Champion Texas A&M University. Washington assumed Pitt’s spot in a 13th/15th place game.
