PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Nicole Ryder (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) posted a hat-trick for Player of the Game notice as No. 2-ranked/Southwest Division Champion San Diego State University pushed by No. 6/Big Ten Division Champion The Ohio State University, 7-5, to capture the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship Third Place Game at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
The 2014 National Champion, San Diego State jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Buckeyes and never looked back in guaranteeing an All-California Top Three at the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship as No. 3/Pacific Coast Divisoin Champion California Polytechnic State University and No. 1/Sierra Pacific Division Champion the University of California-Davis are slated to meet in the National Championship title game.
Ryder opened the scoring by driving in man-up (4:23) and even-strength (2:51) scores to stake the Aztecs to a 2-0 margin. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the first quarter as Marissa Wyan (Fr., Merced, Calif.) cashed in on another man-up opportunity (1:24) to make the score 3-0 prior to Taylor Leach (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) lashing in a natural tally with 37 ticks on the clock to ove Ohio State back within a pair at 3-1.
Neither team could muster much offense in the second quarter as a marker by SDSU’s Kelli Boling (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) at the 4:37 mark to build her team’s lead to 4-1 was the only blight on an otherwise perfect defensive effort by both squads.
Ryder ripped in her third point of the afternoon with 3:42 to go in the third quarter to push San Diego State’s scoreboard advantage to 5-1 prior to Megan Wolf (Jr., Mason, Ohio) putting a crooked number under the Buckeyes’ name with 1:23 on the clock to pull Ohio State back within three at 5-2.
Briana Vazquez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.) answered Wolf’s strike 32 seconds by converting on a six-on-five chance with 51 seconds to play to make it 6-2 in favor of the Aztecs going into the fourth quarter.
Ohio State attempted to stage a dramatic comeback midway through the final frame as Wolf wailed in a shot at 3:47 and Betsy Trace (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) turned a SDSU exclusion into a goal 41 seconds later at 3:06 to shrink the Aztecs’ lead down to 6-4.
Needing some offense to stagnate OSU’s hopes of tying the game and forcing overtime and taking the victory in regulation, San Diego State turned to Boling who burned the Buckeyes with 1:11 to play to regain a three-score lead at 7-4.
The goal would prove to be the back-breaker as a successful five-meter penalty shot by Leach with 50 seconds on the clock would be all Ohio State could muster down the stretch to allow San Diego State to claim a 7-5 win.
For the Aztecs, Boling scored twice to join Ryder in registering multi-goal games. Wyan and Vazquez chipped in solo markers and Montana Jackson (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) made five saves to take the victory. The Third Place finish marks the second best mark by the Aztecs at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship following First (2014), Fourth (2015) and Fifth (2012, 2016) final standings.
Leach led the way for the Buckeyes with a hat-trick. Wolf added two goals and Amanda Morgan (Fr., Worthington, Ohio) stopped three shots as Ohio State finishes in Fourth Place for its highest placement at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship after previously taking 10th in 2014 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
