NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Dallyce Marglon (Sr., Tracy, Calif.) scored three times to claim Player of the Game honors as defending National Champion/No. 2-ranked the University of California-Davis stopped host/No. 15 the University of Notre Dame, 17-6, in the opening game of the 20th Annual/2019 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the Irish’s Rolfs Aquatic Center.
- Four-time (2012, 2013, 2017, 2018) defending National Champion and nine-time (2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) Sierra Pacific Division Champion UC-Davis jumped out to a 6-0 lead versus the host Irish with 5:14 left in the second quarter and never looked back in outscoring Notre Dame 5-0, 5-2 and 4-1 in the first, second and fourth quarters to go along with a three-all offensive output in the third quarter to roll to victory.
- The Aggies wasted little time in putting Notre Dame in a hole as Hailey Jackson (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Nicky Daley (So., Granite Bay, Calif.) ripped off man-up (6:15) and even-strength (4:35) strikes prior to Sydney Preston (Jr., Huntingon Beach, Calif.) and Olivia Tobin (Fr., San Mateo, Calif.) lining in five-meter penalty shots at 3:40 and 2:59, respectively, to stake UC-Davis to a quick 4-0 lead. Carmen Steinmeier (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif.) capped off the first quarter for the defending champions by stroking in a natural tally at 2:03 to make it 5-0 after seven minutes of action.
- The second quarter saw the Aggies rattle off five more goals and allow two Notre Dame shots to kiss the twine to hold a 10-2 lead by intermission.
- Notre Dame chipped its deficit back to six at 10-4 with back-to-back six-on-five tallies by Kelly Fricke (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) at the 6:26 and 4:51 marks of the third quarter, but the Aggies recoreded a 3-1 scoring advantage over the remaining time in the frame to hold a commanding 13-5 lead going into the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter.
- Notre Dame was never again within less than eight goals of UC-Davis as the margin swayed from 14-5 (6:01) to 14-6 (5:35) before back-to-back-to-back goals at 3:40, 3:18 and 1:47 wrapped up the offense and locked the scoreboard at 17-6 prior to the final horn.
- For UC-Davis, Marglon led the way with a hat-trick, while Dominique Burciaga (So., Santa Maria, Calif.), Daley, Tobin and Preston each accounted for pairs of markers. Mallory Phillips (So., Mercer Island, Wash.), Steinmeier, Alyssa Anderson (Jr., Tracy, Calif.), Hailey Jackson (Jr., San Diego, Calif.), Caity Batty (So., Fallbrook, Calif.) and Sidney Hollinger (So., El Cajon, Calif.) each notched solo scores.
- In cage, Cassidy Crouch (Jr., Clovis, Calif.) (six saves) and Sasha Levin-Guracar (Sr., Redwood City, Calif.) split time for the Aggies. Crouch as the starting goalie earned the win.
- Fricke led all scorers with four goals for the Irish, while Julian Blanchard (Fr., East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Phoebe Freitag (So., San Francisco, Calif.) each accounted for solo markers.
- Similar to UC-Davis, Emily Dufner (Sr., Shorthills, N.J.) and Victoria Zawacki (Sr., Old Forge, Pa.) split time in cage with Dufner making one save in the first half in taking the loss, prior to Zawacki finishing out the contest with a stop.
- UC-Davis finished six-for-13 on man-up chances, with Notre Dame converting on three-for-seven.
- Due to the loss, Notre Dame can now finish no higher than Ninth in the final tournament standings as the host/Midwest Division Fourth Place-finisher Irish will return to the Rolfs Aquatic Center pool at 8:40 p.m. this evening in a consolation game versus the loser of No. 19/New England Division Champion Boston College-vs.-No. 12/Mid-Atlantic Division Champion Pennsylvania State University.
- Notre Dame has placed Second (2009, 2015), Fourth (2002), Sixth (2001, 2010), Seventh (2000, 2011), Ninth (2006. 2013, 2014), 10th (2008), 11th (2007) and 12th (2012) in it previous trips to the championship.
- UC-Davis, which is making its 10th appearance in the past 11 years at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship, can finish no lower than Eighth Place in the final 16-team championship as the Aggies earned the rest of the day off and punch their ticket to a 9:00 a.m. clash with the victor of Boston College-Penn State on Saturday, May 4, with a spot in the tournament semifinals on the line.
