CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — No. 21-ranked Brown University split a pair of overtime games at Harvard University’s Crimson Classic as the Bears fell to No. 15 the University of California-Santa Barbara, 14-13, before bouncing back to defeat No. 25 Long Island University, 16-14.
Hanna Tidrenczel and Sofia Holman led the Bears in scoring, logging seven and five goals respectively across the day.
UC-Santa Barbara came out on top by one point in Brown’s opening game. The score was tied at the end of the first quarter, with Aubrie Anderson, Ella Palmer, Tidrenzcel and Holman behind the Bears’ first four points. Madeleine Poissonnier netted a strike in the second quarter, bringing Brown to a halftime lead of 5-4.
The Bears continued to fight hard throughout the second half, with Anderson, Palmer, Tidrenczel, and Holman racking in seven more goals before heading into overtime. Brown netted one more goal courtesy of Holman before the final buzzer sounded — not quite enough to match UCSB’s overtime effort.
The Bears bounced back in the evening to pick up their first win of the weekend. Gaby Montalvo and Tidrenczel shined, bringing in four points apiece to account for eight of the Bears’ sixteen points recorded in the win. Tidrenzcel scored in every quarter of regular gameplay, while Montalvo logged one of three overtime points.
Holman got Brown on the board early in the first quarter. Claire Poissonnier and Tidrenczel were quick to follow suit, and the Bears headed out of the first quarter with three points to LIU’s two. Tidrenczel and Holman each struck again in the second quarter, netting one apiece.
Brown trailed LIU by one point at the beginning of the second half before exploding in the third quarter to rack up six goals, courtesy of Claire Poissonnier, Palmer, Tidrenczel, Alexandra Love and Montalvo with two. LIU evened out the score despite efforts from Tidrenzcel and Montalvo in the fourth quarter, and the Bears headed into overtime tied at 13-all.
Cleo Washer and Ava Schoening scored their first goals of the day in overtime to join Montalvo – who netted her fourth – as Brown claimed a two-score victory.
