BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former University of Michigan women’s water polo athletes Abby Andrews, Sofie Pontre and Amy Ridge were named to the Australia National Team roster for the upcoming 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, on July 14-30.
The World Aquatics Championships provide the first opportunity for the Aussie Stingers to qualify for a position at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
A trio of former Wolverines dot the Australia roster as Andrews, Pontre and Ridge will aim to help their homeland punch at ticket to the Olympic games.
The 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Division I Rookie of the Year, Andrews notched 57 goals, 71 assists, nine drawn exclusions, 47 steals, 13 field blocks and finished 41-9 on sprints during her single season in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Ridge – who competed for Michigan in 2016 – racked up 20 goals, 10 assists, 11 drawn exclusions and 26 steals during a solo campaign at Michigan.
Pontre competed for five seasons in the Maize & Blue (2018-to-2022) as the two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America selection (2020 – Second Team; 2021 – Honorable Mention) pick registered 87 goals, 50 assists, 67 drawn exclusions, 118 steals and 36 field blocks over the span of 150 games.
