BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Danielle Johnson (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) of No. 8-ranked the University of Michigan racked up six goals, five assists, six steals and six field blocks in a 2-2 weekend for the Wolverines at the University of California-San Diego’s Triton Invitational to earn a share of the February 13 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Player of the Week award.
A first-time weekly award recipient from the CWPA league office, Johnson helped lead Michigan to a fourth-place finish at the Triton Invitational.
In a 17-4 win over No. 23 Marist College, she notched three goals and one assist to open the tournament. She helped hold No. 9 University of California-Santa Barbara to two goals while matching that total with two individual goals in a 7-2 victory.
Johnson posted two steals and two field blocks while holding No. 2/defending National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion the University of Southern California (USC) to over 10 goals below its season average in a 9-5 loss. The game marked the first time this season the Trojans were limited to less than 10 goals.
In the tournament’s Third Place game, she had three field blocks, two steals, two assists and one goal in an overtime loss to No. 7 University of California-Irvine.
Johnson shares the Player of the Week award with Emily Wickenheiser (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) of first-year program Saint Francis University. Wickenheiser registered 16 goals, four ejections drawn and eight steals in a 2-1 weekend for the Red Flash at the Bucknell University Bison Invitational to share both the Rookie and Player of the Week awards from the league office.
