MERCED, Calif. — The University of California-Merced seeks a head coach for men’s and women’s water polo.

Under the general direction of the Athletic Director, the incumbent will manage the men’s and women’s team and assume responsibility in the areas of recruiting, retention, coaching, scheduling, game and practice management, providing supervision of assistant coaches, monitoring student-athlete academic progress and eligibility, budget management and fundraising. The incumbent is responsible for the overall management of both teams and is responsible for developing and implementing the vision and goals for each team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Game and Practice Management

  • Design, implement and oversees all game and practice strategies related to men’s and women’s water polo.
  • Ensure player understanding of game strategies as they relate to collegiate water polo. Ensure player understanding of applicable rules and annual rule changes for their sport.
  • Coordinate team practice schedules within the rules of the NAIA, campus department regulations and student-athletes schedules.
  • Coordinate competitive schedule to be fairly balanced between home and away contests and respects the student-athletes academic requirements.
  • Responsible for travel and supervision of student athletes while traveling in state and out of state.
  • Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all promotional and media related events including games.
  • May participate in public relations activities as authorized.
  • Coaches team at competitive events.
  • Plans, conducts and supervises all practice and conditioning sessions.

Student Athlete Welfare

  • Monitor student-athletes academic performance by working with academic advisors and the student athlete support staff.
  • Ensure student-athlete compliance with all departmental academic guidelines.
  • Work in conjunction with the athletic training staff to ensure the physical health of student-athlete.

Recruiting

  • Identify, recruit and evaluate future student athletes within the rules of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) and campus. Develop goals and processes for future growth of the program.
  • Maintain accurate records related to recruit contacts, evaluations and visits.
  • Have an understand of UC Merced admissions requirements and eligibility requirements of the NAIA and consistently apply the requirements.
  • Utilize ARMS software system to maintain appropriate records of recruits.

Compliance

  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules from the Federal, State, University, Department, NAIA and the Cal Pac Conference.
  • Educates student athletes on their team on all applicable rules and regulations from the University, Department, NAIA and the Cal Pac Conference.
  • Ensure student-athletes and assistant coaches comply with NAIA, Cal Pac, Department and university rules and regulations.
  • Annually develop team operational budget to include, but not limited to, team travel, uniforms, supplies and equipment and recruiting which will meet the established goals for the team.
  • Ensure spending is within approved budget annually.

EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in sports science, physiology, Kinesiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education, or sports medicine or other athletic/sport science related field(s) from an accredited university and experience working as a coach or other related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience as indicated.
  • Masters degree preferred in sports science, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and fitness, physical education, or sports medicine or other athletic/sport science related field(s) from an accredited university. (Preferred)
  • Valid CA Driver’s License

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL

  • 2-5 years of coaching water polo at the collegiate level. Proven ability to recruit student athletes.
  • Prior experience as a student athlete at the collegiate level.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
