Division III No. 3 Middlebury College-vs.-Division III No. 1 University of California-Santa Cruz Scoresheet (2022 Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Club Championship – Game #4)

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Division III No. 1-ranked/Sierra Pacific Division representative the University of California-Santa Cruz received scoring from 10 athletes as the Banana Slugs outscored host/North Atlantic Division member/Division III No. 3 Middlebury College 13-0 in the second half to claim an 18-2 semifinal win against the Panthers at the 2022 Women’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship.

The win advances UC-Santa Cruz into the title game at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, against the winner of a semifinal pitting Division III No. 4/Midwest Division institution Washington University in St. Louis and the Panthers.  Middlebury will take on the Bears at 8:00 p.m. this evening with hopes of earning a rematch against the Banana Slugs with the Division III National Championship on the line.

Middlebury held its own against Washington in the first seven minutes prior to the Banana Slugs dominating the remainder of the contest by outscoring the Panthers 3-0, 7-0 and 6-0 in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Neither team was able to break the ice until Sarah Mines (So., Austin, Texas) converted a man-up chance with 4:03 left in the first quarter to push the home team out to a 1-0 margin.  It marked the only team Middlebury held an advantage on the scoreboard as Emma Laszlo (Fr., Alameda, Calif./Encinal) squared the score with 3:43 on the clock prior to Haley Marshall (Fr., Sanger, Calif./Sanger) providing the Banana Slugs a 2-1 lead by converting a man-up opportunity at 2:44.

Middlebury pulled even prior to the close of the opening frame as Estelle Martin (Jr., Palo Alto, Calif.) lined in a shot at 1:41 to deadlock the squads at two-all after seven minutes of action.

The remainder of the game’s offense belonged to UC-Santa Cruz as the Banana Slugs reeled off a 16-0 run to the final horn in overpowering the Panthers.

Ella Chabre (Fr., Alameda, Calif./Encinal), Emma Adams (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) and Marshall started the decisive run by connecting on shots at the 5:16, 4:31 and 3:48 marks of the second quarter, respectively, to gain a 5-2 lead for UC-Santa Cruz by halftime.

Sophia Sussman (Sr., Long Beach, Calif./Millikan), Marshall, Laszlo and Selma Malkic (Fr., Alameda, Calif./Encinal) drilled in four consecutive goals at 4:54, 4:23, 4:08 and 3:35, respectively, to open the third quarter prior to Malkic (2:53), Jacqueline Bursalyan (Jr., Belmont, Calif./Carlmont) (1:48) and Chabre (25 seconds) capping off the frame as the Banana Slugs went ahead 12-2 with one quarter left to play.

Olivia Martinet (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Mission Bay) (6:48, 4:07), Laszlo (5:51), Marshall (5:07), Gwenyth Crow (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) (2:50) and Eileen Zenas (Sr., South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) (58 seconds) wrapped up the game with strikes in the fourth quarter as the Banana Slugs rolled to a 16-goal victory.

For Middlebury, Martin and Mines both notched solo markers in support of a combined eight saves by Sophia Immorlica (So., Cold Spring, N.Y.) and Adelaide Mahler (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.).

Across the tank, Marshall led the Banana Slugs with four goals.  Laszlo (three), Malkic (two), Martinet (two) and Chabre (two) also posted multi-score games with Sussman, Bursalyan, Crow, Zenas and Adams tacking on solo tallies. 

In the cage, Shelby Dinh (Fr., Portland, Ore./Westview) made seven saves to pick-up the win.
