BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — University of Michigan rising senior Isabelle (Issy) Jackson (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan Schools for Girls) and Hartwick College Hall of Fame member Megan Thomson helped New Zealand clip Hungary, 11-10, in the quarterfinals of the 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Thomson – who was inducted to the Hartwick Hall of Fame in 2022 – is serving as New Zealand’s head coach for the World University Games.

Jackson blocked a pair of shots in the game as New Zealand pulled ahead 1-0 by the conclusion of the first quarter and was tied at four-all with Hungary entering halftime.  New Zealand gained some breathing room in the third quarter by outscoring the Hungarians via a 5-4 count prior to keeping pace with Hungary as both teams scored twice in the fourth quarter. 

New Zealand will return to the water on Thursday, July 24, at 10:15 a.m. Eastern/7:15 a.m. Pacific against Germany in the semifinals.  Germany earned its way into the semis by overpowering Japan via a 13-11 score.

In the other semifinal, the United States will face Italy at 6:45 a.m. Eastern/3:45 a.m Pacific.  The Americans earned their spot in the semis by dispatching Australia, 10-8, while Italy advanced by taking down Turkey, 20-5.
