BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — University of Michigan rising junior Madeleine “Maddy” Scarth (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada/Huntington Beach (Calif.)) shot zero-for-three and snagged a team-high five steals as Canada outclassed Mexico, 19-8, in both teams first 13th-16th Place game at the 2025 World Aquatics Women’s Junior World Championships (U20) in Salvador, Brazil.
On offense, Scarth shot zero-for-two on action shots and zero-for-one on a counter-attack opportunity. However, she made her biggest impact on the defensive end with five steals to help Canada race out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and acquire an 11-1 margin by halftime. Leading 13-6 at the conclusion of the third quarter, the Canadians sealed the win with a 6-2 offensive surge in the fourth quarter for an 11-goal victory.
Canada – which previously dropped games versus the People’s Republic of China (12-8 L, August 10) and Australia (9-4 L, August 11) before overcoming South Africa (14-8 W, August 12) to take Third Place in Group D – adds another victory to begin a series of three round robin games with South Africa, Argentina and Mexico to determine places No. 13-to-16 in the final U20 Championship standings. Argentina defeated South Africa by a 15-10 count in the first 13th-16th place game of the series.
On Thursday, August 14, Canada and South Africa will rematch at 10:30 a.m. local/9:30 a.m. Eastern after Argentina and Mexico mix at 9:00 a.m. local/8:00 a.m. Eastern.
The tournament concludes for the four institutions on Friday, August 15, as Argentina meets Canada at 9:00 a.m. local/8:00 a.m. Eastern before Mexico battles South Africa at 10:30 a.m. local/9:30 a.m. Eastern with the results of the meetings establishing the 13th-to-16th positions in the final championship standings.

A member of the Canadian Junior National Team which placed second at the 19U Pan-American Championships in 2022. Scarth started her tenure at Michigan by appearing in three games during a redshirt season. In 2025, she accounted for 14 goals, nine assists, seven steals and won three-of-seven sprint attempts.
