CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Villanova University never trailed as the Wildcats upset No. 21-ranked Brown University, 11-8, on the final day of Harvard University’s Crimson Classic at Blodgett Pool.
The game marked the second meeting of the year between the two programs as the Bears garnered a 12-9 victory on February 2 at home during the Bruno Classic.
Trailing 3-1 at the conclusion of the first quarter, Brown moved within 4-3 with 3:41 left in the second quarter. However, back-to-back goals by the Wildcats pushed the margin to 6-3 entering halftime.
Down 9-7 at the conclusion of the third quarter, the Bears were unable to rally back as Villanova closed the game with back-to-back tallies in the waning moments of the contest to stymie a Brown comeback try and escape with a three-goal victory.
For Brown, Aubrie Anderson (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) punched in four tallies with the quartet of Madeleine Poissonnier (Jr., Tustin, Calif./Foothill), Ella Palmer (Jr., Auckland, New Zealand/St. Cuthbert’s College), Hanna Tidrenczel (So., Budapest, Hungary/Korosi Csoma Sandor Bilingual Baptist) and Gaby Montalvo (So., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each accounting for solo scores.
The marked Villanova’s first win over a ranked opponent since defeating the No. 23 Iona University by a 20-8 count on April 18, 2021, at the Villanova Swim Complex.
Riley Hull starred for the Wildcats as the freshman scored four times, dished out an assist, and drew a season-high six exclusions. Lauren Short and Anna Painter also added multiple goals in the Villanova victory.
