WASHINGTON, Pa. — Host Washington & Jefferson College opened its 2020 season by taking a 26-6 loss against Salem University prior to turning back Penn State Behrend, 10-7, at home during the first day of the 2020 W&J Invitational.
Facing Salem in the Presidents’ season-opener, W&J trailed 6-4 after the first quarter and fell further behind due to a 9-1 scoring outburst by the Tigers in the second frame. Salem continued to pull away in the second half by outscoring Washington & Jefferson by an 11-1 count to claim a 20-goal win.
Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the way in the opener for the home team as the freshman tallied three first quarter goals in her collegiate debut.
Marissa Whitby (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock), Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Jillian Curtis (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) each registered one goal.
Taking on fellow Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III institution Penn State Behrend in a non-league game, W&J evened its record at 1-1 as the Presidents outlasted the Lions by a 10-7 score.
Washington & Jefferson overcame a slow start to trail 4-2 in the second quarter before scoring four straight to take a 6-4 edge into halftime. Magyari scored back-to-back before McClellan and Emma Rearson (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) tallied a goal each to give the Presidents a two-goal lead.
The Presidents maintained their lead throughout the second half before Magyari capped the win with the final goal with nine seconds left.
Magyari and Rearson registered three goals apiece in the victory over the Lions.
McClellan and fellow freshman Megan Deprez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) tallied two goals each to aid the attack.
