BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Goalie Ally Hopkins (Sr., Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) of Division III No. 10-ranked Washington & Jefferson College tallied 34 saves in three games to lead the Presidents back to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship title game and earn recognition as the April 24 CWPA Division III Defensive Player of the Week.
She opened the CWPA Championship weekend at Macalester College’s Riley Pool by turning aside 13 shots in a 10-2 defeat of Utica College prior to stopping nine scoring attempts in an 8-5 defeat of four-time defending league champion Connecticut College in the semifinals.
Facing the host Scots in the title game, she made 12 saves as the Presidents fell by a 10-9 score in overtime.
The award marks the eighth weekly honor from the league office for Hopkins as she claimed accolades as the March 3 and March 31 Division III Defensive Player of the Week in 2014 before picking up February 23 and March 23 Division III Defensive Player of the Week laurels in 2015. The March 14 and April 18 Division III Defensive Player of the Week in 2016, she previously garnered recognition on April 3 earlier this season.
