BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Washington and Lee University standout Tim Stanford ’86 has gone from scoring goals in the water to scoring victories in the court room as the Generals’ Hall of Fame member is the managing partner and shareholder of Downs & Stanford, P.C., a law firm with offices in Dallas, Houston and Austin, Texas.

Frequently sought for his vast knowledge of personal injury, employers’ liability, workers’ compensation law, non-subscriber claims, and subrogation cases. he represents clients in all phases of claims and has particular expertise in litigating cases that have proceeded into district or county court. Board certified in Workers’ Compensation Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, his docket includes cases related to insurance defense which includes liability, coverage, and general litigation for both first-party and third-party cases.

A 1989 graduate of St. Mary’s University with a Juris Doctorate, he was admitted to the Texas bar in 1989 has been admitted to argue cases before the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit and the United States District Court – Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas.

A 2021 inductee to the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame, Stanford was a four-year letterwinner and a two-year co-captain for both the swimming and water polo teams at Washington and Lee.

One of the most decorated athletes in Washington and Lee’s history, Stanford earned First Team All-America honors eight times in swimming and three occasions in water polo.

In swimming, Stanford set school records in the 100-yard butterfly (50.57), 200-yard butterfly (1:52.13), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.04), 800-yard freestyle relay (6:59.98) and 400-yard medley relay (3:53.96). He also set a W&L pool record in the 100 fly (50.57).

Stanford competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships each of his four years with a high finish of second in the 200-yard butterfly and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly at the 1986 NCAA Division III Championships.

In water polo, Stanford was twice presented with the Burt Haaland Outstanding Offensive Water Polo Award and earned All-Southern honors each of his final three seasons. He also received All-State honors each of his final two seasons.
