ST. PAUL, Minn. — Wittenberg University dropped games to Division III No. 5-ranked Chapman University, 20-9, Division III No. 9 Occidental College, 11-7 OT, Division III No. 6 University of La Verne, 15-7, and Ottawa University (Ariz.) at the two-day Macalester College Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, February 19-20.
On Saturday, February 19, the Tigers received scoring from seven players versus Chapman, including four goals by Sierra Bui.
Bui netted all four of her goals in the second quarter as Wittenberg attempted to keep pace with the Panthers. Savannah Cross also chipped in a marker in the second quarter.
Wittenberg tacked on another goal in the third quarter as Evelyn Heil notched her team’s sixth score of the game.
In the fourth quarter, Riley Kettelson, Bui and Tessa Crown each lined in shots to round out the Tigers’ offense in support of a five save performance by goalie Olivia Pena.
Taking on Occidental in game two on February 19, the Red & White put up seven goals in an overtime loss. Emma Menjivar, Grace McLaughlin and Bui got on the board in the first quarter to stake Wittenberg to a 3-2 lead. An empty second quarter allowed Occidental to pull ahead by one at 4-3 heading into halftime, but the Tigers answered back in the third quarter with goals from Bui and Kiersten Heverly. An additional pair of goals from Menjivar and McLaughlin in the fourth quarter were Wittenberg’s last on the day as the team was outscored 4-0 in overtime.
On Sunday, February 20, the Tigers returned to the water and dropped games to La Verne and Ottawa.
Wittenberg continued to look to its freshmen as Bui put up three goals across both games. Also contributing for the Red & White were Heil, Elizabeth Schexnaider, Heverly, McLaughlin, and Meghan Lythgoe against La Verne. Jordan Brough saw two saves against La Verne in the first quarter and Olivia Pena saw three in the fourth.
Contributing in the Tigers final game of the Macalester Invite versus Ottawa were Kailey Cordova, Heverly, Heil, Schexnaider, Bui, McLaughlin and Menjivar.
Overall, Bui finished the weekend with a team-high 10 goals, while Brough stopped 11 shots.
