BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of California and the University of Redlands continue at No. 1 as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the official 2023 Week 2/September 13 Men’s Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Polls.
California, which topped the University of Southern California to claim the 2021 and 2022 NCAA crowns, and Redlands, which captured the 2022 USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Championship against California Lutheran University, remain on pace to defend their crowns.
The MAWPC Top Five leader changes for the second time as many weeks as defending MAWPC champion Fordham University returns to the top spot, while defending NWPC champion Princeton University achieves status as a unanimous top pick in its league’s Top Five rankings.
Voted on by a panel of coaches, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
2023 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 2/September 13)
2021 and 2022 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion the University of California remains a unanimous No. 1 selection in the 2023 Week 2/September 13 National Men’s Varsity Top 20 Poll.
California (100 points) – which held 99 points in the preseason voting prior to racking up 100 points last week – leads a Top 20 which experiences radical shifts following two weeks of competition.
The University of California-Los Angeles (95 points) surpasses the University of Southern California (89 points) to take over at No. 2 and drop the Trojans to No. 3. Pepperdine University (79 points) and Princeton University (75 points) rise to No. 4 and 5, respectively, with Stanford University (74 points) sliding back to No. 6.
University of the Pacific (70 points) backs up to No. 7 with previously tied Long Beach State University (63 points) and the University of California-Irvine (60 points) rearranging to No. 8 and 9 with San Jose State University (48 points) cracking the Top 10.
The University of California-Davis (45 points), the University of California-Santa Barbara (45 points) and California Baptist University (45 points) are tied at No. 11 with the University of California-San Diego (42 points) and Loyola Marymount University (34 points) dropping back to No. 14 and 15.
Brown University (24 points), Fordham University (17 points), the United States Naval Academy (13 points) and Harvard University (9 points) take over at No. 16-to-19 with Santa Clara University (8 points) and the United States Air Force Academy (8 points) rounding out the Top 20 by tying for the final position.

2023 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 2/September 13)
The University of Redlands hangs on to the No. 1 position in the 2023 Week 2/September 13 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll by a single point compared to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
The 2022 USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Champion, Redlands (98 points) holds off CMS (97 points) by one vote with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (89 points) and Chapman University (84 points) remaining at No. 3 and 4.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (79 points) engineers a path around California Lutheran University (76 points) to assume the No. 5 position with Occidental College (71 points), Johns Hopkins University (62 points) and Whittier College (47 points) ranking at No. 7-to-9.
The University of La Verne (36 points) and Augustana College (36 points) complete the Division III Top 10 with a tie for the final spot.

2023 Men’s Varsity Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 2/September 13)
Defending Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Champion Fordham University reclaims the throne as the top ranked team in the 2023 Week 2/September 13 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Poll.
Fordham (99 points) – which was dislodged from its preseason perch as the leading program in the MAWPC by the United States Naval Academy last week – traverses back to the top of the league rankings. Wagner College (93 points) – which defeated Navy over the weekend in the league opener for both programs – follows the Rams up on the rankings to rate at No. 2.
Navy (91 points) remains within striking distance behind the Rams and Seahawks, while Bucknell University (86 points) and George Washington University (65 points) exchange the final two positions to complete the Top Five.

Two-time defending Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) champion Princeton University remains No. 1 through 14 days of the 2023 season as the squad leads the 2023 Week 2/September 13 NWPC Top Five Poll.
The 2018, 2021 and 2022 NWPC Champion Tigers (100 points) return to holding the top spot as a unanimous No. 1 pick as the Tigers earned 100 points in the preseason voting before attaining 98 points last week. Brown University (92 points), three-time (2016, 2017, 2019) NWPC Champion Harvard University (91 points), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (87 points) and Iona University (80 points) remain in their prior positions as the NWPC Top Five experiences no changes from the Week 1 voting.
