BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Maddy Steere (So., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School) of the University of Michigan scored once as Australia could not overcome a 5-1 halftime deficit in taking an 8-6 loss to Greece on Friday, July 28, in the Seventh Place game of the 2017 FINA World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
Australia, which finishes in Eighth Place behind the United States, Spain, Russia, Canada, Hungary, Italy and Greece, fell behind 1-0 in the first quarter and trailed by four at halftime via a 4-1 outburst by the Greeks in the second quarter. The teams traded trios of tallies in the third quarter to make it 8-4 Greece entering the fourth quarter prior to Australia shaving the deficit down to a pair with a 2-0 surge in the closing minutes of the game.
Neither team exceeded expectations on man-up chances as Australia shot zero-for-seven, with Greece cashing in on one-of-11 opportunities.
For Australia, Keesja Gofers, Hannah Buckling, Isobel Bishop, Rowie Webster, Morgan Baxter and Steere each scored once as the team the wraps up the tournament with a 3-4 record, including a pair of losses to Greece. The Aussies previously faced Kazakhstan (16-4 W), Russia (8-5 W), Greece (11-8 L), France (16-2 W), the United States (7-5 L) and Italy (18-17 L Shootout) prior to meeting the Greeks for a second time.
Steere concludes the tournament with three goals as she previously notched a pair in Australia’s opening game against Kazakhstan.
