PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Player of the Game Dallyce Marglon (Jr., Tracy, Calif.) scored five times and goalies Kelley Cartwright (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Cassidy Crouch (Fr., Clovis, Calif.) combined to not allow a goal as No. 1-ranked the University of California-Davis blanked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 17-0, in the opening round of the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
The shutout marks the third goose-egg in the recent history of Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship competition – all with a connection to UC-Davis.
The Sierra Pacific Division Champion Aggies last accomplished the feat on May 5, 2012 as Megan Reese, Tiffany Cheung and Greta Gettelfinger each notched second half goals as UC-Davis downed the University of California-Santa Cruz by a 3-0 final score to reach the semifinals of the 2012 National Collegiate Club Championship tournament at Florida State University’s Morcom Aquatics Center on the way to capturing the National Collegiate Club Championship by a 2-1 count over California Polytechnic State University.
Prior to the 2012 blanking, California State University-Chico defeated New York University, 10-0, on May 7, 2009 at UC-Davis’ Schaal Pool.
In the 2017 edition of the feat, the current Aggies built leads of 3-0 and 6-0 by the conclusion of the first and second quarters to dominate play for the entirety of the game’s 28 minutes of regulation.
For UC-Davis, Diana Hatamian (Jr., San Jose, Calif.) and Sydney Preston (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) joined Marglon in posting hat-tricks as the duo deposited four and three goals, respectively, to combine with the Player of the Game to rack-up 12 of the Aggies’ 17 scores. Sofia Caryotakis (Jr., Portola Valley, Calif.) tacked on a pair of tallies with Lauren Lesyna (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif.), Carmen Steinmeier (Fr., Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Marie-Charlotte Popp (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.) put away single strikes.
In cage, Cartwright earned the win by recording four saves over three quarters of action prior to Crouch coming on to turn aside two shots over the duration of the fourth quarter.
The win advances 2012 and 2013 National Champion UC-Davis into the tournament quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, back at Trees Pool where the Aggies will meet the victor of a first round game clash between No. 4/Midwest Division Champion Grand Valley State University and No. 12/Atlantic Division Champion the University of Virginia.
UC-Davis is aiming to continue a string of success and Top Five finishes as the team can finish no lower than Eighth Place due to its first round win. In the history of the program at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship, the Aggies previously collected First (2012, 2013), Second (2011), Third (2008, 2014, 2016) and Fifth (2009) Place marks.
For North Atlantic Division Champion MIT, goalie Vivian Zhang (So., San Jose, Calif.) led the way with a game-high 10 saves.
The Engineers, who can now finish no higher than Ninth Place due to the first round defeat, will continue the tournament in the consolation side of the bracket this evening at 7:30 p.m. against the fallen from the Grand Valley State-vs.-Virginia first round match-up.
This marks the MIT program’s first appearance at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship since finishing in Eighth Place under the tutelage of now Brown University head coach Felix Mercado in 2007 at Williams College. In 2006 at Northwestern University, MIT claimed Seventh Place. In the squad’s inaugural appearance at the National Collegiate Club Championship in 2005 at Texas A&M University, MIT collected a program best Fifth Place finish.
