No. 6 The Ohio State University-vs.-Washington University in St. Louis Scoresheet
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Megan Wolf (Jr., Mason, Ohio) scored four times to garner Player of the Game recognition as No. 6-ranked/Big Ten Division Champion The Ohio State University received tallies from nine players to dispatch Heartland Division Champion Washington University of St. Louis, 17-2, in the opening round of the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
Courtesy the win, the Buckeyes advance to the tournament quarterfinals at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, where Ohio State will meet the victor of a first round game pitting No. 17/Northwest Division Champion the University of Washington and New York Division Champion Columbia University. Washington in St. Louis falls into the consolation side of the bracket with the loss and will face the loser of the Washington-vs.-Columbia first round game at 8:40 p.m. later this evening.
Ohio State, which is making its second appearance at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship after downing the 2016 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship runner-up the University of Michigan by a 7-6 count in the Big Ten Division title game at Purdue University, dominated the game from the opening sprint to the closing horn as the Buckeyes built a 6-0 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter and never looked back to roll into the quarterfinals.
Laura Seidel (Gr., Durham, N.C.) opened the scoring 14 seconds into the seven-minute first quarter by slipping in a shot at 6:46 prior to Wolf trip-hammering home back-to-back strikes at 6:27 and 5:27 to make it 3-0.
Jory Gould (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Taylor Leach (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Betsy Trace (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) closed out the opening frame by pumping in points at 4:35, 4:19 and 2:23, respectively, as the Buckeyes bashed their way to a 6-0 lead with a sextet of even-strength strikes.
Following a successful five-meter penalty shot by Katie Caldwell (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) with 4:44 remaining in the second quarter to engorge the lead to 7-0, Wolf and Caldwell finished out the first half by torquing in tallies at 4:06 and 33 seconds, respectively, to make it 9-0 as eight of OSU’s nine-first half markers came at even-strength.
Even-strength success continued to fuel the Buckeyes in the third quarter as Maddie Franzoni (Jr., Mason, Ohio) (6:36, 5:32) and Leach (5:11, 24 seconds) surrounded a strike by Gould (5:59) to provide Ohio State a 14-0 lead after 21 minutes of action.
The Bears of Washington University in St. Louis broke up a shutout try by OSU goalie Amanda Morgan (Fr., Worthington, Ohio) 16 seconds into the fourth quarter as Jennie Greenstein (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) converted on a penalty call against Maddie Nurre (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) at 6:45 via a five-meter shot.
Wolf notched her fourth score of the game at 6:23 prior to Sara McTigue (So., LaGrange, Ill.) and Rachael Farber (Fr., Naperville, Ill.) following with natural markers of their own at 3:53 and 2:49, respectively, to stake Ohio State to a 17-1 lead.
Greenstein put a bow on the game with 38 seconds left as she unleashed an even-strength shot that eluded Morgan for the 17-2 final score.
Leach joined Wolf in posting hat-tricks for the victors, while Gould, Franzoni and Caldwell each accounted for pairs of goals. McTigue, Trace, Seidel and Farber chipped in solo tallies in support of a four save effort from Morgan.
On the other end of the tank, Greenstein exclusively accounted for the Bears’ offense with goalie Isabelle Trier (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) suffering the loss with 11 saves.
Washington can now finish no higher than Ninth in the final 16-team standings, but retains the ability to post the second best mark by a Heartland Division team in a 16-team field since 2005. Since 2005, Heartland teams have placed Eighth (2012-Lindenwood University), 13th (2011-Lindenwood; 2014-Washington), 14th (2010-Illinois State University) and 15th (2005-Knox; 2006, 2009-Carleton College; 2007, 2008-Lindenwood; 2015-Washington; 2016-Washington) in 16-team fields. From 2001-to-2004, Heartland teams finished 12th (2003—Carthage College; 2004—Carthage) in 12-team fields, while the division did not send a representative to either the 2001 or 2002 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship tournaments.
