THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Brown University women’s water polo bested Division III No. 9-ranked Occidental College, 10-3, and host/Division III No. 2 California Lutheran University, 10-3, at CLU’s Samuelson Aquatics Center to close out the Bears’ eight-day, nine-game California trip.

On the final day of their West Coast swing, the Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Tigers of Occidental in their first game before gaining an 8-3 halftime edge against the host Regals of Cal Lutheran in game two. Brown closed its road trip with a 6-3 record.

Between the two games, senior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) led the Bears with five goals. Freshman Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) totaled five points on three goals and two assists against Occidental.

Against Occidental, Schaum totaled three goals and two assists.

The Bears took a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained that score line at halftime before using a 4-0 run in the fourth frame to close out the Tigers.

Schaum led the Bears with five points while freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) posted two goals, an assist and two steals, and Heilman notched two goals and an assist.

Freshman Lily Keck (La Jolla, Calif.) and sophomore Jamie Smith (Lexington, Ky.) each registered a goal and an assist, and junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted one goal.

In the cage, sophomore goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 16 saves and did not allow a goal over the opening 20:23.

The Bears opened the game with a 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Perez and Rosas started the contest’s scoring. Heilman converted back-to-back goals before Schaum completed the run. Neither team scored in the second stanza.

After Occidental began the second half’s scoring, Schaum gave Brown back a five-goal margin at 6-1. The Tigers pulled within 6-2 heading to the fourth frame.

The Bears opened the final period on a 4-0 run as Smith, Keck, Schaum and Perez scored in order before the Tigers closed the game’s scoring. 

In the late game, Heilman and junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) each scored a hat trick against Cal Lutheran

The Bears gained an 8-3 lead at halftime and did not allow the host Regals to score in the second half.

Heilman and Miller netted three goals apiece while sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) posted two goals. Rosas and freshman Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) both scored once, and Perez dished out three assists.

Senior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped four shots and did not permit a goal over the final 19:17.

The Bears staked themselves to a 3-0 edge at the end of the first quarter behind a goal from Atwell and back-to-back markers from Miller.

After a goal from CLU opened the second quarter, Miller and Atwell answered to push Brown ahead 5-1. Rosas scored in between a pair of Regal tallies as Brown remained ahead 6-3 with 3:18 to go in the second quarter. The Bears outscored the hosts 4-0 the rest of the way.

Cook and Heilman closed the half’s scoring as Brown led 8-3 at the break. Heilman then scored once in the third stanza and once in the fourth frame to keep the Bears in the lead. Dakan shut out the Regals in the second half.
