MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Simon Derby (Fr., Greenwich, Conn.) and Aaron Lawrence (So., Dallas, Texas) inflicted all the offense Division III No. 7-ranked New York University would need as the dynamic duo deposited five goals each to share Player of the Game accolades as NYU dispatched Division III No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University, 18-9, to punch its ticket to the 2018 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship semifinals at Wesleyan University.
NYU, which came into the 2018 Division III Club Championship after finishing in Third Place at the New York Division Championship, is guaranteed to finish no lower than Fourth in the eight-team championship field thanks to making the tournament semifinals. However, the Bobcats will have their work cut out for them in the 6:50 p.m. semifinal as the team will face five-time overall and four-time defending/Division III No. 1 Division III Champion Washington University in St. Louis which knocked off the host Cardinals of Wesleyan by a 25-0 final score in the opening game of the championship tournament.
New York never trailed against Carnegie Mellon as the team raced out to a 4-0 lead by the 2:41 mark of the first quarter to place the Tartans in a hole from which the Mid-Atlantic Division representative was unable to dig itself out of before the concluding horn.
CMU, which finished in Eighth Place at the Mid-Atlantic Championship last weekend, chipped its deficit down to 4-1 with a strike by Jacobian Gobbo (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.), but the Bobcats clawed back with three additional strikes prior to the conclusion of the first quarter to hold a 7-1 lead after the first seven minutes of action.
NYU doubled its advantage on the scoreboard in the second half as the squad outscored Carnegie Mellon 7-1 once again to possess a commanding 14-2 lead by halftime.
The Tartans were unable to rally back as Carnegie Mellon managed to pull within 11 goals at 14-3 with 5:01 left in the third quarter, but NYU outscored their foes 4-1 over the remainder of the frame to push ahead 18-4 going into the fourth quarter.
Carnegie Mellon chipped its final deficit down to nine before the end of the contest as the Tartans outscored the Bobcats 5-0 over the span of the concluding seven minutes for the 18-9 final score.
For NYU, Levy Andratchnikov (Sr., Moscow, Russia) and Mark Wei (So., Taipai, Taiwan) notched pairs of markers, while Ben Conley (Jr., Orland, Calif.), James Pentland (Fr., Oahu, Hawaii), Malik Bouaoudia (Jr., Geneva, Switzerland) and Turner Romey (Jr., San Marino, Calif.) flushed solo strikes in favor of the squad from the Empire State.
In cage, Daniel Novarro (Sr., Harrington Park, N.J.) claimed the victory with four saves, while CMU’s Santiago Brusseau (Fr., New York, N.Y.) suffered the loss with eight saves.
On offense, Kelby Kramer (Fr., Half Moon Bay, Calif.) led the way for the Tartans with five goals to tie NYU’s Lawrence and Darby for game high-scorer accolades. Gobbo got his team two more scores and the duo of Tori Chen (So., San Jose, Calif.) and Joey Santillo (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) did the rest with single tallies.
The loss drops Carnegie Mellon into the consolation side of the tournament bracket as the Tartans will take on host Wesleyan at 5:40 p.m. with a spot in the Fifth Place game on the line. Overall, CMU has previously finished Second (2016), Fourth (2017), Sixth (2005, 2013, 2014, 2015), Seventh (2008, 2010), Eighth (2011) and Ninth (2012) in prior trips to the Division III Club Championship.
