STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — No. 5-ranked Fordham University inched closer to the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) regular season title and top seed for the league championship tournament as the Rams took down host Wagner College, 23-10, for the program’s 11th MAWPC victory of the season..
With the win, Fordham improves to 20-1 overall, 10-0 in the MAWPC, while Wagner falls to 9-15 overall record, 4-5 in the MAWPC. The Rams can lock down the MAWPC regular season title on Sunday, October 25, as Fordham travels to No. 17 the United States Naval Academy for a 10:00 a.m. game prior to wrapping up its MAWPC schedule with a 2:00 p.m. match with George Washington University. A victory in either game earns the Rams the No. 1 seed for the MAWPC Championship on Friday-Sunday, November 20-22, at Bucknell University in Lewiburg, Pa.
Facing Wagner seeking the teams’ 20th overall and 10th MAWPC win of the season, junior Andras Toth led the Rams with six goals and three assists. Junior Luca Provenziani finished with three goals and six assists and grad student and former Seahawks’ athlete Laszlo Strasser also scored three times.
Fordham jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter with Toth scoring two of the five goals, and the Rams increased their lead to 7-1 when Toth and freshman Karlo Dragosevic scored in the first 1:21 of the second quarter.
The Rams led 12-5 at the break and then put the game away by scoring three of the first four goals of the third quarter to take a 15-6 lead. Freshman Vuk Kojic netted two of three Fordham goals during the surge.
Fordham and Wagner have now met 26 times in the past with the Rams winning 22 of the 26 matches, including a 20-8 win in the Bronx earlier this year on October 9.
The win increases Fordham’s MAWPC winning streak to 64 matches, dating back to the 2021 season.
