NOTRE DAME, Ind. — San Diego State University’s Annie Mitchell (Fr., Orange County, Calif.) scored twice and University of Texas goalie Kaylee Champion (So., Pearland, Texas) made 11 saves as the duo shared Player of the Game accolades in a 14-1 victory by the Southwest Division Champion/No. 5-ranked Aztecs over the Texas Division Runner-up/No. 18 Longhorns in the opening round of the 2019 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Notre Dame at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
- The 2014 National Champion Aztecs, who are making their sixth appearance at the championship as the team previously qualified in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, never trailed against the Longhorns as San Diego built a 6-0 lead before the conclusion of the first quarter and grabbed a 10-0 margin with 14 seconds left in the second quarter.
- Texas broke up a shutout bid by SDSU goalie Jennafer Schoonover (Jr., Fairfield, Calif.) with three ticks remaining in the first half as Anna Lang (So., Houston, Texas) flushed a man-up chance to account for the Longhorns’ lone tally in the contest.
- SDSU inflated the final margin of victory in the second half by burying three more strikes in the third quarter and a solo marker in the fourth quarter.
- Marissa Wyan (Jr., Merced, Calif.) and Brenna Killoran (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) recorded high-scorer honors as the duo each deposited trio of tallies to post hat-tricks. Mitchell and Erin Fink (Gr., San Diego, Calif.) flipped in pairs, while the quartet of Natalya Temple (Fr., San Jose, Calif.), Jordan Shoemaker (So., Orange County, Calif.), Rachel Thompson (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and Dana Dragicevic (So., Martinez, Calif.) each put away solo strikes.
- In cage, Schoonover earned the win versus Champion by turning aside nine shots to keep Texas in check for the vast majority of the contest.
- San Diego State finished one-for-one on advantage situations as Wyan rocketed home a five-meter penalty shot with 4:51 left in the first quarter. Texas cashed in on one-of-four man-up bids via Lang’s goal.
- The victory advances the Aztecs into the tournament quarterfinals as San Diego State will take on Midwest Division Champion/No. 11 Lindenwood University – a 14-6 winner against the Colorado School of Mines – at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. The team can now finish no lower than Eighth Place in the final tournament standings.
- San Diego State is aiming to equal its all-time best mark at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship as the squad previously finished Fifth (2012, 2016), First (2014), Fourth (2015) and Third (2017)
- Texas, which made the field after Texas Division Champion Texas A&M University – which downed the Longhorns by a 10-4 score on April 14 for the division crown – elected to vacate its bid to Nationals and allow their nemesis to compete next to the Golden Dome, will take on Rocky Mountain Division Champion the Colorado School of Mines at 6:20 p.m. in the consolation side of the 16-team bracket.
- Since 2002, Texas has placed 10th (2009), 11th (2011, 2012), 12th (2002) and 13th (2007, 2016) as the Longhorns have never finished Ninth or better. However, a win over Colorado Mines combined with a win in its next game will guarantee a shot at the inaugural finish inside the Top 10 as the Longhorns would play for Ninth Place on Sunday, May 5, at 2:15 p.m.
