LONG BEACH/IRVINE, Calif. — The No. 21-ranked Brown University women’s water polo closed out its trip to California by dropping games at No. 9 Long Beach State University, 12-9, and No. 6 University of California-Irvine, 13-6.
Brown had nine different goal scorers, but a slow start to the second half doomed the Bears against the Beach.
The Bears fell behind 2-0 but goals by Ella Palmer and Claire Eusey tied the game. After allowing a goal, Brown got goals from Claire Pisani, Madeline Poissonnier and Alexandra Love to take a 5-3 lead after one quarter.
Sierra Martin scored in the second but was Brown’s only goal as the game was tied six-all at halftime. Long Beach State started the second half on a 5-0 run to go ahead 11-6 before Brown’s final three goals, coming from Claire Poissonnier, Bryn Gioffredi and Sophie Golub.
In the late game, Gioffredi led Brown with two goals as UC-Irvine pulled away from the Bears in the second half. The Bears received goals from Gioffredi and Lily Weiser in the first quarter along withPisani and Gioffredi in the second quarter as Brown trailed 5-4 at halftime.
Love and Martin each scored in the third quarter, but the Anteaters scored three goals to lead by two after three quarters. Brown was outscored 5-0 in the fourth quarter for the final tally.
