BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) honors all the league’s past, present and future military members on Armed Forces Day.
Due to the urging of President Harry S. Truman to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days on August 31, 1949.
Recognized on the third Saturday of May, the single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
The holiday is among 10 holidays that honor the Armed Forces and the National Guard:
- Last Monday of May: Memorial Day
- June 14: Flag Day and Army Day (United States Army)
- August 4: Coast Guard Day (United States Coast Guard)
- September 17: Air Force Day (United States Air Force)
- October 13: US Navy Birthday (United States Navy)
- October 27: Navy Day (United States Navy)
- November 10: Marine Corps Day (United States Marine Corps)
- November 11: Veterans Day
