PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Division III No. 4-ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology split a pair of matches at Brown University’s Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center as the Engineers opened the day with a 21-9 defeat of Mercyhurst University, but fell to the host/No. 15 Bears, 19-8.
Against Mercyhurst, sophomore Adam Ivatorov (Rockaway, N.Y.) and graduate student Bo Tignol (Antwerp, Belgium) scored two goals each in the opening quarter as the Engineers took a 7-2 lead.
MIT extended its lead in the second quarter as the Engineers outscored Mercyhurst 5-2 to pull ahead 12-4. Tignol scored two more goals in the quarter.
A six-goal third quarter helped seal the victory for MIT. First year Matthew Pryce (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored twice in the quarter and added another in the fourth as the Engineers won the match 21-9.
Tignol and Pryce led the Engineers with four goals apiece in the match.
First year Rick Lundh (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) led MIT with five assists while junior Jack King (Los Altos, Calif.) added three.
First year Kunal Rajadhyax (Vernon Hills, Ill.) put up a team-leading three steals.
Senior Colin Weaver (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made six saves and first year Etash Bhat (Southlake, Texas) made three.
Facing Brown, the two teams finished the first quarter tied at three as MIT got two goals from senior Evan Kowal (South Pasadena, Calif.) and a tally by Lundh.
The Bears outscored MIT 14-3 in the next two quarters to take control of the match.
Tignol and first year Kieran Kearns (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) wrapped up the scoring for MIT with goals in the fourth quarter as Brown claimed victory.
Tignol, Kowal and Lundh led MIT with two goals each.
First year William Ewald (Greenwich, Conn.) had a team-leading four steals, while Weaver made 11 saves in the match.
