CHICAGO, Ill. — Former Slippery Rock University standout Frank Mulcrone recently took over as head coach of the water polo program at Brother Rice High School in Chicago, Ill.
A 1989 graduate of Brother Rice, Mulcrone was a member of the swimming and water polo programs all four years. While swimming for the Crusaders, Mulcrone qualified for the state meet from 1988-1989. He was named a member of the All-State team all four years, earned the MVP of the State tournament his senior season, as well as earning the Tony Lawless Award for the Chicago Catholic league. Mulcrone was also inducted into the Circle of Champions, the Brother Rice athletic hall of fame in 2013.
“I hope to have similar success as my brothers and father did winning multiple state championships,” said Mulcrone. “We have a lot of pride in our program and support from the alumni and school. I’m very excited to get started.”
As a student at Brother Rice, Mulcrone led the team to four Chicago Catholic League titles from 1986-1989 and to win three state championships in 1986, 1988 and 1989.
“We’ve had a tradition of being one of the best programs in the state, and I hope to add to that tradition,” said Mulcrone.
A member of the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame, he continued his swimming and water polo career at Slippery Rock University where he was a member of the institution’s 1991 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship qualifying team which placed seventh at the event. A three-time All-America selection in water polo (1991-to-1993), he also garnered Division II All-America honors in swimming for the 200 yard freestyle.
“I was coached by two of the best coaches in the country, my father ‘Moose’ and my college coach Doc Hunkler,” he notes. “They always stressed paying back to the sport after our playing careers ended. Water polo has given me many great opportunities in my life, and I plan on repaying my love of water polo back to the Brother Rice program and players.”
