BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former University of Michigan women’s water polo athletes Sofie Pontre ’21 M ’22 and Abby Andrews were named to the Australia roster for the upcoming 2024 World Aquatics Women’s Water Polo Championship on February 2-18 in Doha, Qatar.

Competitors for the Aussies’ Fourth Place team at the 2023 World Aquatics World Championships hosted in Fukuoka, Japan, during the summer, Pontre, Andrews and the rest of the Australia squad will compete in Pool C at the event against Singapore, Hungary and New Zealand.  A complete schedule for the event is available by CLICKING HERE.  Live streaming of the World Championships will be available on NBC Sports and Peacock (login required).

A five-year competitor for the Maize & Blue, Pontre racked up 87 goals, 50 assists, 137 points, 67 drawn exclusions, 118 steals and 36 field blocks in 150 games during the 2018-2022 seasons.

A two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America honoree with Second (2020) and Honorable Mention (2021) status, she helped Michigan capture the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.  The 2020 season was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Andrews competed for Michigan during the 2019 season and registered 57 goals, 71 assists and 47 steals with a 41-for-50 mark in sprints in the span of 32 games.  A member of the 2019 CWPA Champion Wolverines, she claimed CWPA Rookie of the Year and ACWPC Honorable Mention All-America honors during her lone season in Ann Arbor.  A 2019 CWPA All-Conference Second Team pick, she received Rookie of the Tournament and First Team All-Tournament recognition at the CWPA Championship prior to helping the Maize & Blue reach the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.
