STATEN ISLAND/BRONX, N.Y. — The George Washington University water polo team went 1-1 in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action in New York as the Revolutionaries defeated Wagner College, 13-12, in Staten Island before being undone by No. 9-ranked Fordham University, 20-9, in the Bronx.
The Revolutionaries battled Wagner in a back-and-forth contest during the morning.
The match was tight throughout as neither team held more than a one-goal lead after Wagner’s 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. After trading goals throughout the match, the Revolutionaries found themselves down 11-10 midway through the fourth quarter, but George Washington closed the game on a 3-1 run to clinch a 13-12 victory.
Adonis Vlassis led the way on offense with three goals, while Joseph McCreary, Andrija Sekulic, Antonio Florena and Yam Kabakov each had two goals. Kabakov also added a game-high three field blocks and three steals.
Luca Casotrina manned the net, making 14 saves and adding one assist to contribute on offense as well.
Taking on the defending MAWPC Champion Rams of Fordham in the Bronx, the Revolutionaries were outpaced by nine goals in the first half and trailed 11-2 at halftime.
The team got its offense going in the second half, but it was not enough to get back in the match as Fordham picked up a 20-9 victory.
Kabakov paced GW with three goals, while Florena scored twice as the only other GW student-athlete with multiple goals. Vlassis had a game-high two assists and two steals.
