WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team closed the opening weekend of the regular season by earning a 19-10 victory at longtime rival Washington & Jefferson College in a non-conference battle at the Henry Center Natatorium during the W&J Invitational. The Wolverines fell to McKendree University, 18-7, in the day’s opener.
Five Grove City players produced multi-goal outings in the win over W&J. Sophomore Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Michelle Danley (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) both fired in five goals while sophomore Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored four times. Senior Elizabeth Andrews (Newberg, Ore./Veritas) and freshman Reese Trauger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) both scored twice and sophomore Kyra Johnson (Hamilton, Va.) added a goal.
Andrews, Danley and Melanson all totaled three assists each in the victory while Miller, Trauger and classmate Tia Kannel (York, Pa./Central York) each had two assists.
Andrews led the defensive effort with three steals. Danley, Kannel and Melanson each added two thefts. Junior Alexa Dunn (Girard, Pa./Girard) recorded her first win in goal this season by stopping 16 shots.
Grove City led 8-7 at halftime, extended the lead to 14-10 after three quarters and then clinched the win with a 5-0 edge in the final eight minutes.
Danley scored three times against McKendree. Andrews recorded two goals while Miller and Trauger also scored. Melanson assisted on two scores while Kannel and Miller each added an assist.
Trauger collected four steals while Dunn made five saves.
