BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Three past/current Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) student-athletes were named to the 16-member camp roster for the Australia Women’s Water Polo Team that is preparing for the 2018 FINA World League Super Finals in Kunshan, China, on May 28-June 2.
The Stingers, as Australia’s National Team is known, will head to camp as the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra this week with a final roster for the Super Final expected to be announced early next week.
A total of three former/current CWPA student-athletes made the cut for a training camp invite as former Hartwick College standout Bronwen Knox and University of Michigan athlete Amy Ridge are joined by current Wolverines’ star Madeleine “Maddy” Steere (So., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School).
The captain of the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Australia Olympic Women’s Water Polo teams and two-time Olympic Bronze Medalist (2008, 2012), Knox is the only player in the history of the Hartwick women’s water polo program to earn second team All-America honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). She helped guide the Hawks to a record of 56-20, two CWPA Northern Division titles, a CWPA Eastern crown and a sixth-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Division I Championship during her two seasons in Oneonta, N.Y.
Following her freshman campaign in 2005, she was the CWPA Northern and Eastern Championship Rookie of the Year, a first team CWPA Northern and Eastern selection, and was an ACWPC Honorable Mention All-America selection. In 2006, Knox led the country in scoring with 127 tallies and was later named Most Valuable Player of both the Northern Division and Eastern Championships. She also earned ACWPC All-Academic team honors and received second team All-America accolades.
A 2012 inductee to the Hartwick Hall of Fame, she totaled 229 goals, 57 assists, 286 points, 209 steals at Hartwick, including program single-season record 127 goals and 117 steals in 2006.
Ridge competed for one season at Michigan recording 20 goals, 10 assists, 11 drawn exclusions and 26 steals in 38 games during the 2016 season.
Current Wolverine sophomore Steere will return to her native land after helping the Maize & Blue to a third consecutive CWPA Championship and a fifth place finish at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship. She reached 100 points for the second straight season and was a first-team All-CWPA selection in 2018 as she finished with 74 goals, 34 assists, 108 points, 50 drawn exclusions, 47 steals and 18 field blocks.
A two-time All-CWPA First Team selection, she claimed ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention accolades in 2017 to accompany 2017 and 2018 CWPA Championship All-Tournament First Team recognition and has recorded 125 goals, 83 assists, 64 drawn exclusions and 92 steals in 78 games for Michigan over the past two seasons.
