ANNAPOLIS, MD — Mount St. Mary’s University bested Austin College, 16-12, in Scott Natatorium on the second day of competition at the United States Naval Academy’s Navy Open to raise the Mountaineers’ record to 1-1 on the season.
In the first quarter, the Mount were down by one after an Austin goal in the first three minutes, before Luka Urosevic striked back a minute later to tie the contest at one-all. Neven Cerkez scored a goal after a penalty 30 seconds later prior to Will Matthews adding his name to the scoresheet for a 2-0 run by the Mount.
After a goal was scored by Austin, Urosevic hit the back of the net to push the Mountaineers ahead by a 4-2 count. There was one more final goal by the Kangaroos in the first quarter before they got held scoreless the rest of the frame. This led to a 5-0 Mount run in which Nikos Agritelis, Giannis Skliras, Jack Fox, Matias Miranda and Nick Harper converted opportunities to put Mount St. Mary’s comfortably ahead. Fox was the only one of quintet to score off a penalty as the Mountaineers took advantage of their natural chances against Austin..
The ‘Roos opened the second quarter with momentum striking back with a pair of goals to decrease the deficit Mount had created before Skliras found the back of the net again in response followed by another Urosevic goal. Austin added two more goals to the scoresheet to chip the Mount’s lead down to 11-7 heading into the halftime.
Urosevic opened third quarter with another goal, before Austin and Matthews goal exchanged strikes. The pattern repeated as the Kangaroos punched in a marker before Fox found the back of the net for a response a minute later.
The ‘Roos were unable to overcome the Mountaineers during the remainder of the contest as Mount St. Mary’s staved off Austin down the stretch for four-score victory.
Urosevic led the Mountaineers with six goals, while Matthews, Fox and Skliras scored twice. Agritelis, Cerkez, Harper and Miranda tacked on solo tallies to account for the remainder of Mount St. Mary’s offense.
