No. 1 University of California-San Diego-vs.-No. 17 Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University Scoresheet (2024 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship – Game #4)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Julia Derunes (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) scored three times to lead No. 1-ranked/Southwest Division Champion the University of California-San Diego to a convincing 17-3 defeat of No. 17/Atlantic Division Champion Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) at Texas A&M University’s Student Rec Center in the first round of the 2024 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship.

Courtesy the victory, UC-San Diego earns a spot in the tournament quarterfinals at 10:10 a.m. Central on Saturday, May 4, as the Tritons will take the winner of a first round game matching host/No. 11/Texas Division Champion Texas A&M and No. 16/Southeast Division Champion Florida State University. 

Virginia Tech will take on the loser of the Aggies-Seminoles game at 6:20 p.m Central this evening in the consolation side of the bracket.  Due to the loss, the Hokies can not finish higher than Ninth Place in the 16-team championship field’s final standings.

The Tritons stuck a fork in Virginia Tech during the first quarter by opening up a 6-0 lead by the conclusion of the frame as UC-San Diego overwhelmed the Hokies to outscore the squad 6-0, 4-3, 3-0 and 4-0 in the first, second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.

For Virginia Tech, Cate Carlson accounted for all three of her team’s goals.  In cage, Livy Meeting made two saves in the first half, while Avery Krivis turned aside a shot in the second half.

Derunes was joined in the scoring column for UC-San Diego by nine teammates.  Sunny Perkins (Fr., San Diego, Calif.), Amanda Martilla (Gr., Canyon Lake, Calif.), Cecilia Sommerfield (So., Mercer Island, Wash.), Elizabeth Hernandez (Fr., Murrieta, Calif.) and Natalie Kaplanyan (Sr., Glendale, Calif.) each chipped in pairs of markers, while the quartet of Kayleigh Dennen (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.), Tania Frank (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif.), Emma Amakasu (Fr., Irvine, Calif.) and Abigail Keegan (Gr., San Diego, Calif.) notched solo strikes.

Goalkeeper Story Waxman (So., Santa Monica, Calif.) picked up the win with seven saves and three goals allowed in the first half.  Brynna Moore (So., San Diego, Calif.) completed the contest with three saves in a perfect second half.
