SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 16-ranked Indiana University completed an unbeaten weekend at the Santa Clara University Invitational with a 13-4 win over California State University-Monterey Bay. The Hoosiers gained another outstanding performance from senior Sarah Young, who scored a season-high four goals – the last being the 100th goal of her career – to lead IU towards their fifth straight win.

Young led four Hoosiers with multiple goals in the game. Senior hot hand Jennifer Beadle brought her tally to 19 goals in IU’s last eight games with two versus the Otters. Joelle Nacouzi turned in another two-goal performance, netting both within 27 seconds of each other in the first quarter. Sophomore Megan Abarta added two scores to the winning cause, extending her scoring streak to six games.

Emily Powell, Carlie Crumbaugh, and Riley Beemer entered the ledger with one goal apiece, bringing Beemer’s total to three scores on the weekend.

Defensively, Indiana split the shift in goal between Jessica Gaudreault and Davis Simmons. Gaudreault held the Otters scoreless in the first half to put the finishing touches on a superb weekend between the posts. The Hoosier defense also killed six-of-eight Cal State Monterey Bay power plays.

Stout defense and a quick approach to the attacking end allowed IU to build a 9-0 lead in the first half. The Hoosiers actually scored their first four goals in 1:46 of game clock, sparked by Beadle’s opening goal in the third minute of the game. Young doubled their lead and Nacouzi scored back-to-back goals on fast break opportunities. Indiana completed their 5-0 first quarter two minutes after Nacouzi’s double with a goal from Abarta.

Young had the hat trick wrapped up with just under three minutes remaining in the half, and Powell scored her first of the weekend on the Hoosiers’ next counterattack. Beadle demonstrated the Hoosiers’ tenacity in the first half, grabbing a goal just one second before halftime.

The Hoosiers and Otters evenly split the second half on the score sheet. Abarta scored her fifth of the weekend to interrupt consecutive Monterey Bay goals and Crumbaugh found her first before the third quarter ended.

On Indiana’s first possession of the fourth quarter, Young crossed the century mark with her 100th career goal and her fourth of the game. Young ended the weekend with a team-leading 11 goals, nearly one fourth of the Hoosiers’ total offensive output. Beemer scored in the closing minutes to become the fifth IU player with at least three goals on the weekend.
