BALTIMORE, Md. — The Division III No. 5-ranked Johns Hopkins University water polo team fell to No. 19-ranked George Washington University, 23-8, in the Newton White Aquatic Center.
The Colonials jumped out to a four-goal lead in the opening five and a half minutes. Junior Seth Berke sandwiched a pair of goals around one from Andrija Sekulic and it was 5-1 GW with 1:44 to play in the first. Ford Bruggen added on one more in the final 30 seconds to put the visitors up 6-2 after the first eight minutes.
Theodoros Pateros scored to open the second and push the Colonials’ lead to five. Berke answered with his third of the night, followed by goals from sophomore Ian Raley and graduate student Emerson Sullivan to make it a two-goal game. Nik Schoening ended the Blue Jays’ three-goal spurt with a six-on-five goal that gave the Colonials an 8-5 lead at the half.
GW came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring JHU 6-1 to storm out to a 14-6 lead. Antonin Kralj pushed the lead to nine with a five-meter goal just two seconds into the fourth. Sullivan answered on the ensuing possession, but the Colonials then rattled off five straight and the lead ballooned to 13 with 4:16 to go. Sophomore Chris Lo halted the run with a goal at 4:01, but GW would tack on three more in the final four minutes to account for the 23-8 final.
