WASHINGTON, D.C. — No. 19-ranked George Washington University escaped against Mount St. Mary’s University, 13-12, to pick-up the program’s 13th Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) victory of the season.

Though it was tight late, early on was all GW, with the home team going up 6-2 and scoring goals in quick succession. The first quarter was highlighted by Theodoros Pateros scoring his 100th goal of the season. Mount St. Mary’s did not stay down for long as it rattled off four unanswered in the second quarter to cut the lead down to one at halftime.

GW opened the second half just as it did the first, rattling off two quick goals to push the lead back out to three. The Mountaineers battled back, and with under a minute to play the game was tied.

On GW’s final offensive possession, the Colonials lined a pass to Viktor Jovanovic on the inside, who fought through multiple Mountaineers’ defenders and fired the eventual game-winning shot past the goalkeeper. The Mountaineers had a chance to retaliate, but they couldn’t get a shot off in the final seconds.
