NEWBERG, Ore. — Luke Jacobson (So., Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Zach Burns (Sr., Rockford, Mich.) both contributed three goals as No. 3-ranked/BigTen Division Champion the University of Michigan survived against Division III No. 1/No. 11/Great Lakes Division Champion Washington University in St. Louis in the Third Place game of the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship.

Competing at the Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center, Michigan- which previously placed First (1996, 1998, 2003), Fourth (2004, 2016), Fifth (2015), Seventh (2017), Eighth (2018) and Ninth (2011, 2012) at the National Collegiate Club Championship – broke the ice with back-to-back goals by Jacobson (2:47, man-up) and Burns (2:12) to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.  Antonio Mendez (So., Baltimore, Md.) chipped away at the Bears’ deficit prior to the conclusion of the opening frame by pounding home a shot with 38 ticks left on the clock.

Mendez struck again with 5:09 to go in the second quarter as the second-year stroked in a man-up opportunity to deadlock the teams at two-all.  Jacobson struck again at 4:55 to push the Maize & Blue back in front at 3-2, but Matteo Dall’Olmo (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) converted an extra-man chance with 3:32 until halftime to again even the damage at three-all.

Michigan pulled ahead prior to the halftime horn and padded its lead after intermission as Jacobson (1:21) put the Maize & Blue in front 4-3 before Jeffrey Brill (Sr., Okemos, Mich.) lined in a shot 55 seconds into the second half to provide the Wolverines a 5-3 lead.

Washington chipped away at another two-goal deficit as Zach Hausner (Jr., Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Mendez beat the Michigan defense at 3:08 and 2:24, respectively, to square the teams at five-all.

Brenden Saur (So., Rockford, Mich.) terminated the Bears’ run with 1:50 left in the third quarter by cashing in on a man-up bid.  Michigan’s lead ballooned back to a pair 56 seconds into the fourth quarter as Burns staked Michigan to a 7-5 lead.

In a continuation of the contest’s back-and-forth pattern, Chris Allen (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.), Hausner and Mendez turned the tables on the Wolverines by swishing shots at 5:33, 4:32 and 3:45, respectively, to  put the Bears in front at 8-7.

Washington’s lead lasted for 16 seconds until Jacobson completed his hat-trick at 3:29 to make it eight-all and raise the prospect of overtime.

Burns torched the prospect of extra-time, however, by putting away a six-on-five opportunity at 1:53 for the decisive blow in a 9-8 victory.

For Michigan, Jacobson (three), Burns (three), Smith, Saur and Brill all dented the Bears’ twine, while Adam Bergen (Fr., Dexter, Mich.) defended the Wolverines’ cage via seven saves.

Washington – which claimed seven Division III Club National Championships and previously finished in 12th (2000) and Third (2021) Place at the National Collegiate Club Championship – received scoring from Mendez (four), Hausner (two), Dall’Olmo and Allen.  Between the pipes, Asher Schwartz (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) made 18 saves for the Bears.
