NEW LONDON, Conn. — Utica College fell to host/Division III No. 9 Connecticut College, 15-0, to begin the Pioneers’ Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III league and overall season prior to dropping an 11-1 contest to Division III No. 4 California Lutheran University at the Connecticut College Invitational.

Utica fell to the host Camels of Connecticut College, 15-0, in the program’s first overall and league game of the season. Hnyla Sloan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) drew a team-high three kick outs in the game as well as making two steals. Krystiana Rehrig (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) drew one kick out to go along with her two steals. Freshman Emily Czerwonka (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) made two steals in her collegiate debut, while Ashley Flint (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) added one steal of her own for the Pioneers.

Sophomore Michalyn Winkler (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) played in the goal for UC in the contest. Winkler made 14 saves in the game and also tallied two steals.

The Pioneers fell to California Lutheran University by a score of 12-2 in Utica’s second game of the day.

With 7:15 left in the first quarter, Sloan scored UC’s first goal of the season off of a pass from Alisha Kelly (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon). As the game was winding down, Czerwonka fed teammate Daniella Hannah (Dalton, Georgia/Northwest Whitfield) for the Pioneer’s second goal of the season with just 25 seconds left in the game.

Winkler made seven saves for Utica in taking the loss.
