SAN JOSE, Calif. — The No. 18-ranked St. Francis College Brooklyn men’s water polo team concluded the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament by falling to California Baptist University, 11-10, and No. 13 San Jose State University, 12-7, in addition to a 23-9 defeat of Ottawa University.
Competing at San Jose State’s Student Recreation & Aquatic Center, the Terriers split its games on Saturday, October 26, against Cal Baptist and Ottawa.
Against Cal Baptist, although the Terriers managed to take an early lead on goals from Ivan Stefanovic, Dominick Hevesi and Boris Posavec, the Lancers ultimately came back and claimed a lead of their own.
CBU held the lead until a brief moment in the third quarter when Matheus Santos tied the score.
After the third frame, CBU controlled a one-goal lead. The Terriers and Lancers traded goals in the fourth quarter as they both rattled the cage three times apiece to permit the Lancers to escape with a one-goal victory.
For St. Francis, Stefanovic and Hevesi both scored three times, while Posavec, Vladimir Mickic, Tadeu Rodrigues and Santos chipped in solo markers.
Taking on Ottawa (Arizona) in the late game, the Terriers overwhelmed their opponent early on to claim a 23-9 win.
Senior William Lapkin netted 10 goals in the contest, while Nikola Nikolic tacked on four more.
William Simpson also posted a hat-trick with Zane Drobenko registering a pair of goals. Valentin Horvath, Alex Teplitsky, Posavec and Ricardo Berenguer accounted for the remainder of the Terriers’ damage.
St. Francis Brooklyn wrapped up its West Coast swing on Sunday, October 27, as the Terriers tangled with host San Jose State.
The Terriers opened strong, taking the first lead courtesy a strike by Stefanovic. However, the Spartans quickly returned the favor and took the lead.
Trailing 8-7 after three quarters of action, the Terriers were unable to find their way to the back of the net in the last stanza, whereas the Spartans managed to bypass the Brooklynites defense on four separate occasions to conclude the contest with a five-goal differential.
Stefanovic led SFC with three goals, while Mickic (two), Posavec (one) and Lapkin (one) also found the back of the cage.
